Will the real Ed Miliband please stand up?
Ed Miliband demonstrated the confusion at the of the heart of the government's energy and climate change strategies this morning when he refused to rule out new coal plants which don't capture and bury their emissions – just weeks after his own advisers warned there was no future for these power plants.
He attacked Conservative plans for the introduction of green standards for power stations that would rule out the dirtiest coal plants like E.ON's for Kingsnorth, as "knee jerk" and "not thought through". Apparently, he's happy to play party politics with coal and climate change, just days after he called for a people-powered movement on global warming. Hardly the way to inspire action on the most important issue of our time.
Mr Miliband told the Financial Times that he recognised that "in 20 years time we're not going to be building unabated coal-fired power stations ". But he knows from his own advisors - Lord Turner and his Comm...

EU puts coal ahead of the climate - Greenpeace
European Leaders lack both the vision and the political will to get a deal for
the climate in Copenhagen, Greenpeace warned today.
Commenting on the climate deal
agreed in Brussels, Robin Oakley, Greenpeace
UK climate campaigner,
said:
"If Europe's leaders can't even
bring themselves to rule out new coal plants and accept the emissions targets
the science is demanding, you have to say they shouldn't have bothered going to
Brussels.
Frankly our climate and our children's future would have been safer if they'd
never got on their planes and gone to this meeting. We can't beat climate change
with weak targets and new coal, whatever Brown and Merkel and the rest of them
may choose to believe."
Joris den Blanken, Greenpeace EU
campaigner, said:
"At the same time as Al Gore cheered
protests against coal-fired power stations, EU leaders went ahead and agreed a
deal which could see big coal giants like RWE and E.ON build new ones on state
aid...

Greenpeace and others send emergency letter to European leaders on climate package
NGOs across Europe united today to warn their political leaders that
horse trading and diplomatic brinkmanship could destroy a historic package of
measures aimed at tackling climate change.
Representatives from the Climate
Action Network, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth have sent a joint letter to
the heads of Europe's main institutions
demanding that leaders have the courage to face down those countries determined
to massively weaken the climate change deal.
The most recent draft of the
package, if accepted, would result in a totally inadequate
deal:
The current proposal
would allow European industries covered by the Emissions Trading Scheme (like
power stations and steel works) to 'buy in' 50 per cent of their emission cuts from
countries outside the EU. For sectors outside the scheme (like housing, schools
and transport), the figure is at least 66 per cent.
Some countries are
pushing for a free allocation of ETS permits for new coal f...

Greenpeace reaction to Plane Stupid protest at Stansted Airport
Reacting to this morning's protest
at Stansted, a Greenpeace spokesperson said:
"The climate change secretary Ed
Miliband called for a Suffragette-style movement to pressure governments to act.
Well, he got his wish. The Suffragettes were disruptive and lambasted by the
establishment of the day, but have been utterly vindicated by history, and no
doubt it will be the same with Plane Stupid.
"The delays to passengers are
unfortunate, but right now we're in the most important hundred months in human
history as we try to beat climate change before it's too late - and the
government's plans to expand airports could destroy our chances before we
start."
